On-it Pro Video of the Chuck Patterson Rally

This little video made it onto the web early, so we decided to show it.  If you haven’t heard yet the Chuck Patterson Rally is a killer.  20% of the field failed to finish and those who did earned it.  The event is a true test of a competitors metal and not one to miss.  Next stop, Deerfield Beach.  It will be interesting to see who is up to the challenge.

It is worth noting that Connor’s use of a relatively new product, the LiftSUP, created quite a stir and gave him a noticeable advantage over the competition.  I’m sure we will be hearing more about this product in the future.

The race challenged the best with World Champion Connor Baxter, Fernando Stalla and Slater Trout battling it out for most of the race.  In the end it was Connor who overcame an apparent near blackout while attempting to reenter the  water for his last leg that won the race.  In five plus years of watching these races I’ve never seen competitors of this caliber walking into the water at the end of a lap.  It was a sight to see.

Stay tuned for results, race recap and more photos/videos over the next few days as we recover from a great weekend of racing.

2009 Watermans Paddle for Humanity Race Video

The 2009 event was pretty darn fun.  Conditions were perfect and the surf was just big enough to pose a challenge without being a problem.  Definitely a day to remember.

FAQ: The DOT Format

Introduction to DOT format:

Paddling as a sport has seen a massive increase over the last five years, thanks in the most part to the meteoric rise of standup paddling, both coastally and on inland lakes and rivers.  Although equipment and technique have experienced profound change during this period of rapid growth the actual event format has largely remained the same – paddlers compete over a given distance and are judged based off of how quickly they complete the course. Beginning in 2012 the Paddle for Humanity event series will introduce a unique and revolutionary race format known as DOT, or Distance Over Time.

FAQ:

What is a DOT race?

DOT stands for Distance Over Time.  Unlike traditional distance and BOP style events which judge participants on their time over a given distance, DOT style events are time based, judging the performance of a participant on how much distance he or she can paddle in a set amount of time.  Participants will paddle laps on a course equal to or greater than one ½ mile in length.  At the end of the allotted time a horn will be blown signaling the final lap.  At this time all paddlers must finish their current lap, round a specific buoy, known as a turnout, and move directly to the finish line.

How long will the PFH events be?

For the 2012 Paddle for Humanity will feature a one-mile course and a 1:00 (one hour) cut off. (more…)

PADDLE FOR HUMANITY ADDS TWO STOPS TO NATIONAL SERIES

April 28 – September 15, 2012

March 2, 2012 – The Watermans Paddle for Humanity is building on four years of success by expanding to five events in 2012.  The award winning series will feature multiple events on both coasts with stops in California, Florida, Washington D.C. and Texas – bringing coastal and inland paddling communities together for a good cause.

The success of the three-stop 2011 series and increasing demand for quality events has bolstered the Paddle for Humanities growth and united the paddling community. What was once a single grass roots event on the sands of Dana Point has grown into a five stop series that has connected paddlers with people in need in all parts of the world.  In 2011 the Paddle for Humanity was recognized by the paddling community and awarded the SUP Magazine “Philanthropic Event of the Year” at the first annual SUP awards. The award highlighted the continuing efforts of the series and its founders, its reach in the paddling community and its professionalism in the execution of the events.

“[The Paddle for Humanity] has always been about creating an event that channels the positive energy of the paddling community towards a good cause.  The support for the event series from the industry and the paddlers has been amazing,” says founder and race co-director, Pete Stirling. “We are looking forward to continued growth in the coming years.”

In addition to two new stops, the Paddle for Humanity will be rolling out a new multi-race format that feature events and activities for paddlers of all ages and skill levels.
